Tablut

Tablut is a historical strategy board game that belongs to the Tafl family of games, which were played by the Vikings and other Nordic and Celtic peoples. It’s one of the best-documented Tafl games thanks to a 1732 account by Carl Linnaeus. Here's a breakdown of what it is and how to play:

Objective

There are two sides: the Swedes (defenders) and the Muscovites (attackers). The Swedes' goal is to help their king escape to one of the corners of the board. The Muscovites' goal is to capture the king before he escapes.

Setup

The game is played on a 9x9 board. The king starts in the center square (called the castle). The Swedes (8 soldiers) are placed symmetrically around the king. The Muscovites (16 attackers) are positioned in a diamond shape on the outer edges.

Basic Rules

1. Turns: Players alternate turns. The Swedes control both the king and the soldiers; the other player controls the Muscovites.

2. Movement:

All pieces move like a rook in chess—any number of spaces horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally. Pieces cannot jump over other pieces. The castle (center square) is restricted: Only the king may occupy the castle. Other pieces can pass through it but not land on it.

3. Capturing:

A piece is captured by sandwiching it between two enemies in a straight line (no diagonal captures).

The king is special:

In some versions, he must be surrounded on all four sides to be captured. In others, just three sides if the fourth side is the castle.

4. Winning:

The Swedes win if the king reaches any corner square. The Muscovites win if they capture the king.

Strategy Tips

Swedes should work to open paths for the king and protect him while advancing. Muscovites should block escape routes and gradually close in on the king. Positioning and timing are crucial.
