Assemble your pieces into a cool robot and carry your chess set to your next game in the coolest way possible. Then disassemble and play.
See illustration for assembly help:
* Forming the head and body by sliding the queen's tab into the middle of the king and sliding down. * Form shoulders by sliding in the two flat bottomed pawns into the body. * Form feet and legs by mating two of the pawns base-to-base and attaching the knights to one end. Then join the legs to the body at the hips. * Form the arms by mating one pawn base-to-base with the rook, and the bishop to the pawn. (Detail lovers will make sure the fingers are in the right place.) Then snap the rook into the shoulder pawn. Disassemble by reversing the steps to play chess.

I had several other original entries like the Cybot and ModWheels that I entered and was actively promoting. I kinda forgot I had entered this into the contest until it won. Turns out all anyone wants from me is two years ago. But I don't want to argue with a win.
Truth is I wouldn't have even uploaded this one to PinShape if Makerbot hadn't so fully embraced the dark side lately that I no longer cared about keeping this item as a Thingiverse exclusive for them. The timing just worked out that it coincided with this contest. So thank Makerbot.
Great design, Joe! Just as cool as it was when you won the TinkerCad/Makerbot chess challenge two years ago ;) http://www.webpronews.com/print-your-own-transforming-chess-robot-2012-04
Kinda sucks for the contestants who came up with original designs...
