Description

I've always wanted to make my own version of an acoustic 3D-printed violin, an instrument that sounds authentic without the help of electronics.

This is a full-size, fully playable acoustic violin based on tracings of a Stradivarius. It is compatible with most violin fittings (strings, bridge, pegs, tailpiece etc) but some of these fittings are also 3D printable, with the included files.  The prototypes were made on a Form 2 SLA printer. The parts should work with an SLS printer and maybe(!)  an FDM printer with fine nozzle and support generation.

*Form 2 Users: All of the parts are contained within the .form files, you can disregard the .stl files. As for other printers, the .stl set is complete as well, and you can ignore the .form files.

I have included instructions on how to assemble the violin.

The violin was designed parametrically on Onshape, a new cloud-based modeling program. You can view the open-source design (and create an editable copy) for free here.

If you'd like to learn more about how I designed this, please have a look at the blog post I wrote at Formlabs.com

This design is like a work of art, so beautiful, I guess I have to buy 2KG of <a href='https://ujoybio3d.com'>metallic pla filament</a> material to print it out, yeah. I want to try it.

Here’s a comment you can use for your acoustic 3D-printed violin project:

"I've always dreamed of creating my own version of an acoustic 3D-printed violin, designed to sound authentic without relying on electronics. My goal is to build a full-size, fully playable violin based on tracings of a Stradivarius, which adds a touch of historical significance to the project. This design will be compatible with most standard violin fittings, including strings, bridges, pegs, and tailpieces. I'm excited to explore the possibility of 3D-printing some of these fittings as well, which would further enhance the customization and accessibility of the instrument. This project not only combines my love for music and technology but also allows me to experiment with innovative materials and techniques!"https://freddys-menu.com/

<a href="https://www.gopromotional.co.uk/branded-products/water-bottles">Branded water bottles</a> offer a practical way to stay hydrated while promoting your brand, just as a violin provides elegance and precision in music. These water bottles serve as both functional items and marketing tools, while a violin enhances musical performance with its rich, expressive sound. Both contribute to their respective fields—one through daily use and visibility, and the other by enriching cultural and artistic experiences.

daveyen1 over 2 years ago

We are working on this print and wanted to share a little of our experience. We found that the slots for anchoring the carbon rods were too small and we had to try to remove some of the material in order to make them fit in. Of course, some material is left inside which doesn't allow the rods to insert fully and so we had to cut down the rods about 1cm to get the whole body to assemble. Also, one suggestion to make the design better would be to offset the sound post from the carbon rod anchor in the center piece. Not only would that make the sound post more robust, but then the carbon rod anchor could be made as a clip in like the other side which would make the install easier.

daveyen1 over 2 years ago

Just an update as we finished the assembly. First, the bridge as printed is too short to be used. It doesn't lift the strings high enough to clear the fingerboard. The holes/slots on the tailpiece for the strings are too small to fit a standard ball end string through it, so those had to be drilled out. The pegs required brass rods to be inserted and we found those were very difficult to get installed. Even with them in, the pegs still feel a bit flimsy using PLA. I think a standard set of plastic pegs would be easier to use. I plan on replacing them. The fit of the body was varied. The top halves fit well together and to the center piece. The bottom pieces did not work so well. In order to get the corners to fit, we had a fairly large gap between the left and right halves. We essentially "welded" them together using a 3D pen. The 3D pen was useful for filling the gaps in the seams in order to seal up the body.

daveyen1 7 months ago

Post build update: The tailpiece eventually (over a year) split across the string holes. It may be stronger if you print the layers aligned with the string tension rather than perpendicular to it. We'll give that a try and see if it lasts. But likely all the pieces that deal with string tension (tailpiece and pegs) will likely work better if printed using ABS rather than PLA.

Hi Brian, - is the part "Carbon fiber bar, 1/8" x 3/8" x 24" (3x)" Item # 4409 on the website? The sizes don't seem to match.

daveyen1 7 months ago

You have to cut them to the proper sizes.

txsilvercraft about 5 years ago

do you need supports?

daveyen1 7 months ago

There are carbon fiber rods running the length of the body as well as inside the neck to create the rigidity required to support the string tension.

Dear bchan,
Hello, I'm Kim Ga Young, a student at Soonchunhyng University in South Korea.
I send this message to ask your permission to use your viloin modeling file for my team project.
My team project is to model and print a violin through a 3D printer and then upload the violin performance to YouTube as an educational purpose.
While I was searching the 3D modeling file, I found your violin modeling file and performance video. I'm very impressed by the beautiful melody of the violin you made.
It would be an honor if I could train others through your violin. I'd like you to give me your permission, concidering the good intentions.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.

How do I see the length of the fingerboard in onshape? When I right clicked > show dimensions, it only shows dimensions for widths of the ends, but not the length.

Is this a real working violin? This is brilliant, I think. Thank you very much. I will give this model to my sister. She plays the violin with me and she will definitely like this one.

Can you help with the Setting in CURA? do I need a Build Plate Adhesion? Do I need to Generate Support? (lots of sanding) I saw that you said Infill should be 0%....Should I print at .1 or .06? Bed tempature? Nozel Tempature? (using pla 205-225 degrees)

This is a great design. I used your scroll part on another project https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2672095. on that page you will find a special support block that can be used to orient and support the scroll for FDM printing. I changed the base of the scroll to fit my needs, but the rest is original, so that support base should work for this design with proper alignment and spacing. There is a link on that page crediting you and linking back to this page. Thanks!

Hi, I am using 3d printed violins as a part of my senior project and I would really like to use your model. However, the parts are outside of my current printing capabilities. Could I contact you about trying to acquire one?

JustNeonHere about 8 years ago

Any chance of a fretted version?

bchan about 8 years ago

I wasn't planning to, because violins are usually not fretted. However, the fingerboard is removable, so you can try by adding strips of thin material. If it doesn't work, just print a new fingerboard!

jefferymott35 over 7 years ago

I've seen fingerboard overlays on eBay recently. I think I also saw that someone had made a 3D printed fretted cover for violin.

Hi, it's quite a large size print - can it only print on Form 2 then ? Due to the dimensions. Great work :)

marcus_mizelle over 8 years ago

I'm very interested in this design, but is there any way for you to know if this design can be made on the Form 1+ SLA printer.

bchan over 8 years ago

Hi Marcus, If the parts can fit in the build volume, then it should print fine on the Form 1+.

Brād Axe over 8 years ago

This is a great design. My daughter is into music, and we have been aware of the Hovalin project (http://www.hovalin.com/) for a while (are you? You should probably give them some ideas!). She has been chasing after me to print that one, but it is designed with parts that are way bigger than this. Some of them do not fit the print bed of my only printer. I will probably give this one a try.

dushshantha almost 9 years ago

I am printing this with Wood on a FDM with 100% infill and 0.1mm layer height. . Hopefully strong enough to hold the force. I tried few test pieces with the settings and seems strong enough. I will update how it goes.

David van der Spek over 8 years ago

I'm very interested in hearing how this went. I had the same plan and tips are always welcome.

ryan_hoagland almost 9 years ago

Any thoughts on infill percentage for an FDM printer? Should the walls be solid? Would the sound be affected at say 20% infill?

bchan almost 9 years ago

I think solid would be best. There's a lot of force going through those walls!
