Desktop Satellite Antenna

The Pinshape community voted and this model won the award for Top Integrated Electronics Design of 2016!

This model won 3rd place in the Design for Electronics Contest!

A wide variety of interesting components were used to create this 3D printed satellite antenna model. With a WiFi enabled microcontroller, GPS receiver, magnetometer (compass), and two stepper motors, this unit is capable of tracking celestial objects in real-time.

The main body of the satellite antenna is completely self contained and can be lifted from the base without needing to detach wires or clips. The base section uses an inductive charging set to wirelessly transfer power to the main body components. This enables continuous rotation on the horizontal azimuth track, but also introduces a challenge faced by many space robots: The inductive charging set will not deliver enough power to continuously run the motors and other modules, so we’ll need to selectively power off modules and charge a battery until we have enough energy to perform a particular operation.

Update 10/27/16:

Added support for SRC022A-6 slip rings and a mounting adapter for attaching NeoPixels to the dish. 

The new base and main_mount files ending with _SRC022A-6.stl are compatible with both the inductive charging set and the SRC022A-6 slip ring.

I looked at your code and all it does is move the dish to the north or south ,you claim it tracks objects in space but there is no where in the code where this is allowed, example my telescope will locate and track celestial objects however the user must enter the time ,date and location of the object to start with (celestial coordinates) also the telescope must be aligned to either 1,2 or 3 stars and nowhere in your code is there any allowance for this information to be entered. Yes you have a good idea BUT it is NOT a complete project.

I'm interested in buying a copy, but Pinshape purchasing has been down for a while now. Tried reaching out via email & Youtube but heard nothing back. Lovely design, but has it been abandoned? Cant seem to find the component list and build guide anywhere. Keen to purchase and try out. Without these, it is only good for a plain 3D print. Can you please update the broken links above and/or include these details with the download package as has been suggested previously. It is a great and fun project to keep alive.

This is really cool! But you'll need to coat the dish with some kind of high-conductivity metal. Since the dish is plastic, it won't provide any signal gain since microwaves will pass straight through.

Currently making my way through this print, just ordered all of the bolts and nuts. Next to source all the electronics! No idea about how to code it all up but that's an issue for later :)
