This is an elaborate model of an 1820 Stephenson Steam Locomotive called "The Rocket". It is comprised of about 100 individual parts. I derived the STL files for these parts by converting a detailed set of 2D (and 3D) drawings (PDF files included) that I discovered on a website called www.modelengineeringwebsite.co... These highly detailed 2D and 3D drawings were created by Julius De Waal of JDW Draughting Services in Papakura NZ. I transposed the PDF parts into 3D parts in Solidworks 2017. The 3D printed parts are assembled using mostly 2-56 hex head screws purchased from RTL Fasteners (www.rtlfasteners.com). You can of course super glue the parts together if you want to. I have included the PDF files and they are very helpful for understanding how the parts assemble into the finished model. All the STL files are created to the exact dimensions shown in the PDF files and all parts fit together very well. It was necessary to scale them down in my slicer by 50% to fit most parts on my Wanhao i3 Duplicator. In some cases it was necessary to split parts into pieces to get them to fit my printer and then bolt the pieces together once printed. Some plumbing pieces are made from copper electrical wire of varying guage (closest to scale diameter). The large copper water/steam pipe from the firebox to the boiler is made from carbon fiber archery arrows and 3d printed elbow pieces. Even at 50% the model ends up fairly large but impressive. It is 23" long, 15" high and 7" wide. In some cases I split parts into multiple pieces for two reasons. One to realize multiple color PLA (i.e. the wheels) and two to provide a flat starting surface to ensure good contact with the printing surface throughout the print process. I will be creating a word document that I will add to this download once it's done. The word document will contain detailed part instructions to aid in printing. It will also contain more detailed instructions on how to assemble the parts for the final product. This is an elaborate model and will take some time to create and assemble the parts.
